When you become the leader, more and more people will want to take that position from you. In any facet of life, everyone wants to be number one. However, there are those who would rather spread the false rumors and negativity instead of out working you. Remember that the false rumors and negativity are sign that you are winning. You are ahead of them. Embrace the negativity as an accolade of the accomplishment. There is no need to fight back against it. Let the others focus on negativity while you focus on your work, your goals, your clients, etc... In the end, you remain in your position as the leader, the others are still way behind you...
